About Carin Gilfry

Carin Gilfry, American mezzo-soprano, is an exciting and versatile performer. She is an opera singer, voice actor, and creator and host of the children’s webseries Rosie’s Place. In 2014 she was featured on an episode of NPR’s This American Life in a live opera written by Philip Glass and Matthew Aucoin based on the true story of the time she locked herself in a closet narrating an audiobook in a New York hotel room. In the summer of 2010, Ms. Gilfry created the role of Estrella in the world premier of Lewis Spratlan’s Life is a Dream at the Santa Fe Opera. In November of the same year she made her Los Angeles Opera debut as Giovanna in Verdi’s Rigolettounder the musical direction of Maestro James Conlon. In the summer of 2011, Ms. Gilfry appeared as Thelma Yablonski in the Glimmerglass Opera production of Later the Same Evening by John Musto, and Louis Kronenberger in Jeanine Tesori’s world premiere of A Blizzard on Marblehead Neck. Ms. Gilfry covered the role of Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. In April 2013, she sang the roles of Mastrilla and Brambilla in La Perichole by Jaques Offenbach with New York City Opera. Other operatic highlights include the U.S. premiere of Cavalli’s Eliogabalo conducted by Jane Glover at the Aspen Music Festival, Zweite Dame in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at The Juilliard School, Hansel in Hansel and Gretelat the Aspen Music Festival, and the Austrian Woman in John Adams’ The Death of Klinghoffer conducted by the composer.

Ms. Gilfry is an avid performer of concert, and chamber music. In December of 2014, she made her Phoenix Symphony debut singing as the alto soloist in Händel’s Messiah. In March of 2009, she performed as part of the Les Arts Florissants residency at the Juilliard School under the direction of William Christie. In October of 2008, Ms. Gilfry was lauded for her performance of Luciano Berio’s Circles with the Juilliard Axiom Ensemble, and in November 2009 she repeated her performance of Circles at the Musée du Louvre with a group from the Opéra National de Paris. In 2013 she sang with the Rocky Mountain String Trio at the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland. Ms. Gilfry has also ventured into the world of American musical theater. In December of 2009, she appeared alongside her father, baritone Rod Gilfry, as Liesl in 27 performances of The Sound of Music at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

As a voice actor, Ms. Gilfry has appeared in commercials for Zulily.com, Busbud, Liberty University, and Halekulani Resorts. She is the voice of Cephalon Vol in the video game Warframe, and the voices of Nasira and Talenta in the game Heroes Charge. She has narrated over 70 books and novels, including the Fabled Forest Series written by Trisha Sugarek, River’s Edge by Erin Keyser Horn, An Avalon Christmas by Darien Gee, and Sweet Life by Mia King. Ms. Gilfry is the German voice of P&O Ferries in the United Kingdom. In 2008, Ms. Gilfry was the featured soloist for the film Maro with music written by Aram Mandossian, and in 2010 her voice was featured in a commercial for the NBA’s Washington Wizards with music also written by Aram Mandossian.

Ms. Gilfry holds a Master of Music Degree from The Juilliard School, a Bachelor of Music Degree from the USC Thornton School of Music, and was a member of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program at the Los Angeles Opera.
